It's not a short answer. I think the reason people jailbreak falls
into one of two camps. Camp one are those people who feel there's a
few too many restrictions on their phones, and want a bit more power.
As someone who is not jailbroken, I read with envy all of the things
you can do with a jailbroken phone: send and receive texts from your
computer using your web browser of choice, block specific callers or
texters and set up specific rules for how certain numbers are handled,
set up lots of quick ways to get where you want to be such as opening
your radio app by holding down the volume button for a few seconds,
open apps and toggle settings using your voice, and so on. Basically,
it turns your device into a mini computer and there is a whole host of
genuine benefits that you can have.

The other camp are unlockers: people who want to use their GSM phones
on other carriers. To be clear, there's no reason at all for locking
phones other than control--it's totally arbitrary, and even illegal
now in some countries such as New Zealand. So I don't blame people for
wanting to unlock their phones.

I have heard from others on this list that jailbreaking somehow makes
your device vulnerable, but there is little empirical data that I have
seen which corroborates this: unless, just as with a PC or a MAC, you
install a viscious or insecure app. In fact, non-jailbroken iPhones
have security concerns as well.

You are right though, that if you need warranty service and you walk
into your local Apple store with a jailbroken iPhone, they will of
course not fix it for you.
