Thanks to everyone who chimed in with advice and suggestions.

I ended up deleting the earphone from the phone and, after fully
charging both, I paired them once again. At first I wasn't sure it had
worked because the screen seemed to have frozen. But when I put the
earphone in my ear it was working. Yay!

You guys are the best!
