I can answer one of your questions about the battery. The port closest to the 
micro usb port is where you plug your IPhone in. The other port is for an IPad. 
It puts out more current than the one for the phone. Yes, the micro port is 
where you plug in the charger cord, which is exceedingly short. I also have no 
sight, so I can't tell you how long it takes to charge the battery. I'm not 
sure it matters much how you have the ports oriented, just so you can find the 
small button which you push to turn the battery on, so it will chargew a 
connected device. You don't need to turn it on to charge it up, only to charge 
connected devices. And it is suppose to shut itself off when a device is 
charged.
