Okay, I finally got home to some wifi and have been able to download the app. It looks really interesting and I like the interface. The app will automatically read out details from POI's around you. The data is as stated taken straight from foursquare. This is not a 'yellow pages' type model for POI data as someone guessed at. Also the app is available outside the US, i'm in Australia and the app description states some of the other non-english languages for which there are localisation's.
I haven't been able to go for a walk to see how it responds but sitting here at home I can see the direction and distance to a number of things around me. I got the app to give me my current location and I got the street name and distance and direction to the nearest corner. On the negative side, the whole interface seems to frees up and or go slow when the GPS signal is poor. The app does self voice the fact that the GPS is poor as well though. BTW, You can turn off self voicing if you like. Anyway i have only had a brief look so far but definitely don't regret spending $12 on it. Not that I want to encourage more expensive apps but lets face it, I spend that much on a whim for a few cups of coffee.
