Hi, when you sign up for 4square, you then bring it up and choose check
in. It's located at the bottom. I think the third button. It will list
the nearest things by you whether they are coffee shops or bars, or hair
cutting places. It will not tell you in what direction they are at, but
the list does update to tell you if you are close. Another good app is
Around Me. It's also free and doesn't need any sign up for using it. The
best thing is to try it around where you are now and see how it works
when you are not crunched for time.
I don't know of a demo or tutorial for it. The app itself is pretty easy
and most buttons are labeled right. Some restaurants even have menus
which you can look at right from the app which is cool.

Raul, thank you for the suggestion. I have downloaded the app and signed up,
but now what? Can you point me to a tutorial or demo.
I am going to San Francisco next week, and I hoped to find something that would
help me to find a coffee shop or just to see what shops I am passing. Is that
how you see using the app? As you walk down the street, will it tell you what
stores or buildings you are passing?
As I am home the next couple of days, in a neighborhood, I don't really have
the chance to put the app through its paces before I needed. Therefore, any
help will be most appreciated!
