Hank,

Gosh, a lot of responses, yet, none that comment on this fact that Apple have
conveyed since the release of the iPad1, I should just add, that this is
certainly not the case with the iPad3, and I believe even the iPad2. I have
owned all three, but, cannot recall with the iPad2, but, do remember it
certainly being an issue with iPad1.

iPad1 will charge from a computer USB port, but, slower than from a mains
outlet. The iPad1 when connected to USB will charge, however, only if it is
either switched off or in standby mode, if you unlock the iPad1 to use it, then
the charging cycle is interrupted.

So, if you plug it into charge from your computer USB port, you will note that
it begins to charge, however, if you unlock it, to check battery status on the
device itself, you will note that it states battery level only, and not that it
is charging. This is because by unlocking it, you have interrupted the charging
cycle.

This is what Apple themselves told me during several conversations about this
issue.
