Part of it, Fred, is honestly just taking the load off your phone and its battery. If your phone has to check for mail, say, every fifteen minutes, that's going to eat up a fair chunk of battery. Of course, exchange works slightly differently; the exchange server actually "calls" your phone if you will, so your phone doesn't have to "call" the server every fifteen minutes or so. But there are some problems with Gmail exchange and I'm also led to believe that this takes slightly more battery life than true push notifications pushed to your iPhone from an app.
For some business people they really do want to know the second they receive an Email, but I think for most of us it's a balance between fast checking of Email and taking that load off your battery.
