But it's all the fault of the Romans/Saxons/danes/Normans/Polyticians. The 
Normans were French in their spelling habits which were more peculiar than 
ours, and they imposed it on ours;  and I dare say Americans is more poluted 
than that!

You may be the OCR Queen, but you are not the spelling queen unless they
spell fourth differently in Ireland *smile*. 4th is indeed spelled the way
Chuck spelled it, just like the word "four" with a "th" at the end. The word
"forth" without the "u" of course exists as well - it's one of those
fantastic examples of how difficult the English spelling actually is with
all its rules and exceptions to the rules and just strange ways to spell
something, e.g. who would ever think that "beauty" is spelled the way it is
if "duty" sounds exactly the same and is spelled completely differently.
