Hi Sandy and Others,

I wrote this comment in another post discussing the Text Detective app, but
I'll make the suggestion here. One way to minimize the problems with trying to
hold the iPhone steady, lift it, and still hit the button to activate the
camera for OCR is to place your forefinger on the "Start Scan" button when you
hold your camera. I have my thumbs around the bottom edge of the iPhone (held
in landscape mode), my right forefinger resting on the screen and on "Start
Scan" button, and pointing parallel to the bottom edge of the iPhone, generally
in the direction of the "Home" button, which is to the left in this case, and
the other fingers of my hand around the top edge of the iPhone, and supporting
it. Basically, my thumb and ring finger or middle finger of each hand is
circling the right and left side edges of the iPhone and supporting it in
landscape mode, and I can rest my forefinger on the screen. If you swipe your
forefinger up and down, windshield wiper fashion, it will touch the three
sections where VoiceOver announces "Text Detective", then the "Tap the `Start
Scan' button…" instructions, and the "Start Scan" button. I leave it resting
on the "Start Scan" button as I lift the iPhone. Then I can split tap on the
screen with the forefinger of my left hand to activate the button.

Because the phone is support by hands, the light tap on the screen to activate
the button doesn't jostle the iPhone. Practice holding the iPhone in landscape
mode with your hands in a comfortable position to do the split tap without
having to do the lift. Then, when you're comfortable with this (or as
comfortable as you can manage to be with your hands in this position *grin*),
go ahead and try lifting and tapping.

I sympathize with your point about having to do umpteen different things at
once and keep the device flat and steady while tapping the button. And I do
like the feature of Prizmo where you can use your voice to activate the
picture taking. But please don't give up on these apps. Eventually, we'll
find some combination of features that will work for us.

Best wishes,

Esther
