Hey Jennie, For the iPhone software itself, head to Settings, General, Software Update. However, software updates are pretty infrequent and if you follow this list you'll be sure to know right away.
For app updates, open the app store and head to the updates tab (at the bottom right-corner of the screen). All your updates will be listed there. Eventually, your device will check for updated apps automatically and the app store icon will have a badge indicating how many app updates are available. This badge will also be shown on the button for the updates tab.
