Martin, This is how IMAP mail functions because this is how it's meant to work. I don't know if there are still providers only dealing with POP3 but it's probably likely that your wife could change over to IMAP if she wanted to do this. With IMAP you work with the mail server in real time so, as you delete a message, regardless of which piece of equipment you're using, it will then be deleted from the item you're using and will not appear on any of the devices.
I did it ages back and am just no expert on talking you through it, but I know others on list will be able to do so. BTW: She would still keep her current email account(s). Hope this helps a bit.
