You can find great deals if you hunt for them. You're always seeing discounts/sales for iPads and especially older models. Last year, I got my mother a first gen iPad Mini 64GB with cellular data for $400.00. at that time, it was a very solid buy. I saw that same model on sale over the weekend at Cow Boom or All4Cellular or one of those sites refurbished for $210.00. Even current models can be had at a cheaper price. Usually a $50.00discount . Not much more than that. Apple also has very good deals on refurbished iPads that include one year of Apple Care. The sales price is around $100.00 off or so. I can't recall if they offer current iPads refurbished.
If you're ok with getting an older model, then you can score a good price.
