Yes, a friend of mine found this out the hard way. I had given him my old first gen iPad a while back and he used it hapily. But then I gave him my fourth gen iPad and he wanted to give the first gen iPad to his wife. She had already been using it some but he decided to reset it and totally change it over to her. When he did this, he discovered that many of the apps no longer had an equivalent that would work with the first gen iPad any longer. I personally wouldn't buy a first generation iPad though I imagine there might be some scenarios for which it could be okay.
