Thanks for that explanation, Alan. I appreciate it.

However, I'm running 12, so don't know how that will work out.

I think, as I've taken my phone back to defaults before, I'll probably end up
with my Cloud backup as I don't really feel confident with ITunes 12 without
sufficient information. I worked through the language etc even with my first
phone, once I'd got VO speaking, and I guess I can do that part again if I
must! <Smiles>

Thanks again for your comments. I'll keep the instructions nearby to help me
to remember all that needs to be done when the time comes.

  Carol,

1.. I'm running iTunes 11.4.0.18 which still has the sidebar that is no
longer present in iTunes 12.x so my steps might be different from what you
experience. I first place focus on my iPhone to be backed up in the sidebar
under devices. When that is done, the main portion of the iTunes screen has a
series of tabs or buttons across the top which you can tab to. The first one of
these is Summary which contains the settings for doing an encrypted backup. The
other tabs on my system are Info, Apps, tones, Music, Movies, TV Shows,
Podcasts, Books, and Photos. The tabs displayed might be a function of other
settings but I can't recall for sure. When you hear Summary, press the enter
key which will say something like "checked." When you tab through the other
tabs, they should be identified followed by "not checked." If you keep tabbing,
you'll get to the details related to the checked Summary tab which include a
section identifying your phone and its capacity, phone number, serial number,
etc. and the version of iOS it contains. Following the phone section is a
Backups section and an Options section. The Backups section has an
Automatically Backup part on the left and a Manually Backup and Restore part on
the right. You can set the Automatically Backup setting to be either to iCloud
which I do or to your computer by selecting the applicable radio button beside
each of these options. This is strictly a matter of preference since the
manual, encrypted backup you do will be done to your computer. Just below the
Automatically backup part is a tickbox labeled Encrypt iPhone backup which you
will want to tick or select. I will say that how focus moves within my version
of iTunes is not at all intuitive so be aware of that as you tab through it. I
would expect it to move within all the settings in each section but instead it
moves from left to right, line by line jumping between sections. So you'll hear
a setting that relates to the automatic backup followed by one that relates to
the manual backup after you tab. Just pay attention and don't let this confuse
you. The Manually Backup part has two buttons which are next to each other and
are Back up now and Restore backup. You'll want to make sure the Encrypt iPhone
Backup box is ticked before executing the Back Up Now button. After you execute
it, iTunes should prompt you for your encrypted backup password. Make sure you
don't lose this. You just have to do this one time because it will use the same
password for future manual backups unless you execute the Change Password
button which is at the bottom of the Backup section.
2.. I'm not sure I went in the best order but what I did ended up working
for me. Before you do anything with setting up your new phone, you'll want to
attach your old iPhone to your computer, launch iTunes, and do the encrypted
backup of it. I think if I were you, I'd shut iTunes down at that point and
deal with the setup process of your new phone. You can always restart iTunes
when your new iPhone is connected to your computer to do the restore of your
old phone backup.
3.. If I were doing it again, after backing up my old device, I would focus
on the new iPhone and go through all the initial setup steps it requires. Just
make sure you triple click home when first powering on the new iPhone so
VoiceOver will turn on. I think all the subsequent steps are fairly
straightforward. I admit that I always get a little confused on that initial
screen where VoiceOver is speaking all the different languages but I think
swiping left or right with 3 fingers might move past that. I admit that I've
only set up two iPhones and those were 2 years apart so I've not mastered the
process. I know many others have posted about how to get past that language
screen so maybe one of them will chime in. If not, you might want to post back
with that question. At some point, I think the phone will ask you if you're
setting it up as a new device or restoring a previous backup but since I went a
bit out of order, I'm not sure exactly where that occurs. I think I might have
restored my backup before getting to that screen.
4.. VoiceOver prompted me repeatedly to place my finger on the home key
when doing the fingerprint setup. It would say place it and then say remove it.
I tried using an index finger first but after several times of not succeeding,
I tried my thumb and got it to take after a few times. I tried moving my finger
around the home button as if I were trying to get a good feel of it. I'm not
sure if that was the correct procedure but others on the list with much more
experience with this can weigh in. Fortunately, I got it to work.

Best of luck with setting up your new phone and post back with more questions.

  Hi Alan,

As I shall shortly upgrade, I thought I'd ask a few questions here.

  1. As I only use ITunes occasionally to add music to my phone, can you
give the steps (in as much detail as possible) to do the Encripted Backup,
please.

  2. How did you get out of those initial screens of setup to get to do your
encripted backup? (It may of course be obvious to me when I come to do it but
I can't quite think through that part from your comments.)

  3. Did you manage to get back to that "guided part" of the setup, or did
you have to go to the various settings to add those things which you knew you
had been asked to do earlier? If you got back, any ideas how you did that?

  4. I have never dared yet to do the fingerprint setting and I gather yours
didn't take the first time. Please tell me a little more on that one.

Thanks for any additional info you can give.

  Carol P

    Subject: RE: iPhone upgrade process

    Charles,

If all goes as planned, congrats on getting your new iPhone 6 on Monday. I
got my new Verizon iPhone 6 yesterday. Like you I upgraded from an iPhone 5 but
I also changed service providers from AT&T to Verizon. I'll outline the steps I
followed which will be a little different since I changed carriers and also got
my iPhone 5 unlocked from AT&T in order to prepare it for selling.

Here are the steps I followed:

1.I did an encrypted backup with iTunes after making sure my iTunes for
Windows version 11.4.0.18 was compatible with iOS 8.x and the iPhone 6. Like
you, I still run Windows XP.

2.As others have said, I prefer using encrypted iTunes backups since all
passwords and apps will be restored to the new device. I don't think apps are
restored from iCloud backups and you must go fetch the latest versions of apps
if restoring through iCloud.

3.I'll state the obvious that you make sure you have your password used
with the encrypted backup handy as you'll have to have it in order to restore.
I keep mine in a passwords app on both my computer and iPhone.

4.I restored my iPhone 5 backup to the iPhone 5 in order to unlock that
AT&T device. This is required to unlock an AT&T device after you've initiated
the unlock process by completing the form on the AT&T unlock portal site.

5.I connected my new iPhone 6 to the computer with the lightning USB cable
in order to automatically power it up. I did this based on Sieghard's
recommendation in the last couple of days and to also ensure that the phone had
plenty of power.

6.When the phone powered up (I have enough vision to tell the screen is
on), I triple clicked the home button and VoiceOver turned on. I don't remember
how long it took the iPhone 6 to power up after plugging n the cable but it was
within a few seconds. Sieghard's recommendation of waiting 45 seconds is
probably good for handling any delays that might occur in the powering up
process.

7.Here is where I varied a bit from the norm. Instead of going through the
initial phone activation screens to do things like language selection, iCloud
sign in, Apple ID confirmation, fingerprint setup, etc., I launched iTunes and
began the restore from an encrypted backup process.

8.The restore went fine after I gave it the password and all my apps and
settings were restored.

9.I noticed that when placing focus on my iPhone in iTunes that my phone
number said something like n/a so I knew I had more steps to do on the iPhone
6. I then went through the steps on the phone to select language, give my Apple
ID, set up the fingerprint, etc. These steps were easy and VoiceOver was there
every step of the way. It took me a few tries to get the fingerprint recognized
but I got there eventually.

    10. After I verified that my phone number had successfully ported over
from AT&T by calling my new iPhone 6, I went into settings on my iPhone 5 and
reset it to erase everything.

Good luck with setting up your new iPhone 6 and I hope the process goes
smoothly. Enjoy your new phone because the iPhone 6 really is a super fine
device.

If all goes as planned, I will be getting an iPhone 6 from Verizon on or
before Monday. I currently use an iPhone 5, also from Verizon. When I receive
the new phone, what should I do, in sequence, to make a smooth and complete
transfer of all data from the 5 to the 6? Anything I need to do before
connecting the new device to my PC for all data transfer using the latest
version of iTunes? How about stuff that must be done after iTunes has been
used?

As I understand it, iCloud cannot be used unless you have a version of
Windows beyond XP, which I do not have. If this is true, I will not be using
iCloud with the new phone. I do not currently do so with the iPhone 5. Thanks
in advance.
