After writing my previous message and tweeting it to nearly 500 followers, someone replied that there's a fix at http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1784 - So I went there. The fix is for users on 64-bit systems with older video cards unable to handle some aspect of video playback. Somehow I don't think it has anything to do with the fact that accessibility hooks have been removed from the program.
