Good evening fellow listers,
Today while having my morning coffee, I picked up my iPhone (which by the
way is a 6 plus running the latest ios) to watch "days of our lives" like I
do every day.
I opened safari, the page I usually watch the show on, and it would not let
me click to watch the video. A pop up appeared saying virus detected ios
security or something to that affect. I didn't know how to get out of this
pop-up. The background was gray and this pop-up in the middle my only
choice was an ok button. Panicking I clicked it and it took me to some
other website. Quickly coming to my senses I clicked home button and got
out of there. However I thought when I click on safari again it will take
me to the same website. I went into safari and clicked pages and clicked
close on that website. I lost voiceover and had to do a hard reset because
nothing on the phone worked. When I restarted the phone everything seemed
fine. So smart me said let me try this again.
I went back to the website and I saw where I usually click to watch the
video now voiceover was saying click to close add and continue, so sounded
logical and I clicked it, oh no, now we have a new problem.
Like before a pop-up appeared saying safari security major issue please
contact apple support at 1877-203-4097 or I think that's the number.
Automatically my wheels in my little brain began to work and I thought
something isn't right.
Since I'm a voiceover user I thought I better call apple accessibility and
make sure that I'm actually speaking to someone from apple, and not any tom,
dick, or harry.
I called apple accessibility at the number that you wonderful people on
these lists have provided, (by the way thanks for that).
They were wonderful, patient, and absolutely a pleasure to deal with. The
website apparently has been hacked and the pop-up with the phone number is a
scam to get you to call them so they can ask you for all your personal
information.
At least that's what the teck thought. He told me to stay away from that
website for a few days in hopes that they get it sorted it out, and of
course reminded me to never call a number that says they are apple support
but to always call the numbers I know to be true. In speaking with the teck
I told him about some problems I'm having reading my Greek recipes on the
mac using the rss readers and he passed me over to a mac tech that is
familiar with voiceover and we played around with the mac for a while. I'm
so impressed with the people I spoke to today.
Just wanted to let you all know about my strange experience and my wonderful
experience with apple accessibility. I feel I should post this to all the
lists I belong to that deal with apple products so people can read about my
experience and not make the same mistakes I did. So please accept my
appologies if you get this more then once.
Have a great evening
Zoe
