This typically happens when the cable is not certified by apple. Often, non-certified cables will work for a short period of time and then this error will come up. I have also noticed that this error comes up shortly before the cable does not charge the device. I recommend the AmazonBasics lighting cables. They are certified and a lot stronger than the Apple cables. You can purchase 3Ft or 6Ft cable lengths, the 6Ft cable is really nice.
