I never had much luck with the Bard app being controlled in the background. I haven't used it for quite a while, though. In iOS8, background apps that play media sometimes get pushed out and thus remotes won't control their media anymore. This might be what's happening. At least, it happens to Voice Dream Reader once every day or two, and it happened once or twice to Downcast.
