I thought I read somewhere that Push does not work for gmail and you have to use one of thew time options like 15 minutes, 30 minutes etc.

If you go to settings then mail contacts and calendars there will be a Fitch new data button. You want to activate that and select the correct setting for the email account. You will have the option to select from push, fetch or manual. Manual is the best way to go about if you want to conserve your battery power as it will not constantly try to find new emails.
