If you use contracted Braille Screen Input then VO will not speak any characters. As I understand it the word is held in some kind of buffer set by the translator. The buffer is then released when you do a space or newline. If you set it to Six Dot with a three finger swipe to the left or right then VO will speak by character providing it is set that way in settings, general, accessibility, VoiceOver and typing feedback.

I'm enjoying braille screen input, but trying to figure what setting I need to change so
vo speaks characters. I sometimes hit the keyboard inthe wrong spot and don't get the
characters I intended. A good example is the "to" field of a message. I can get
^ows okay, but can't seem to get vo to speak characters. Yet, if I enter the name of an
app from the homescreen, each character is spoken as I enter them. Just seems a bit odd.

Thanks,
