You might also want to check that bluetooth and autobrightness are turned off. Bluetooth is turned on by default so that people who rely exclusively on Braille displays to interact with their iDevices, such as those who are deafblind, are not locked out of their iDevice and forced to ask someone to repair their display before they can use their iDevice. I don't know why autobrightness is turned on, but when I updated to iOS 8, it was.
