So, I upgraded to iTunes 12. It's actually not as bad as I was driving it would be. I took a look at some podcasts, and I think I have a handle on things now. One thing that Apple did that I do like is the separation of the books category into a category for iBooks/PDF's and a category for audiobooks.
Unfortunately, I still can't back up the VDR library file. I managed to back up the folder called inbox, but not the library file. I haven't ever really had anything go wrong with an update, so I think I'll just upgrade to I OS 8.3 and take my chances. I will, of course, make an encrypted backup, and transfer purchases and all that stuff. I hope nothing goes caboom with VDR.
