The wife and I watched the German broadcast version of the Klitschko fight live this past weekend. It was boring as hell, but using the RTL channel and VPN app on the iPad and throwing to the Apple TV works well. I think too she can log into the German Netflix with her US ID, but I haven’t really asked her if she uses the VPN in that instance or how she goes about it. She’s only done that a few times since really, there’s not much different overseas Netflix content that’s different from the US. That or it’s just doved which neither one of us can stand anyway.

VPNs encrypt the traffic and add an additional point before they reach you, so they can have speed implications. Also, they need to be logged into. Apple TV doesn't support them either so you'll need to either set up the VPN at the router level, or use alternative methods. Most people will be better off using a service that intercepts DNS requests, which have none of these disadvantages. They'll only work with the popular services though, so for complete access, it's ideal to have access to both a DNS interception service and VPN.
