Was the checkbox for encrypted backup checked or unchecked? If it was checked, then yes, you would have done an encrypted backup in the past. If you had to check the checkbox for encrypted backup and you were asked for a password, then if you tab and are asked to confirm that password it means you are good to go, iTunes is simply asking you to enter a password and confirm it. After you do that your backup starts and it will be encrypted and you will then need that password if you want to restore from said backup.

If you want to make an encrypted backup and the computer asks for a password, this is because you have to invent a password to protect your encrypted backup from a device the first time you do one.
