Hi Kieth,
This is one of the reasons I use Fantastical 2.
You double tap on the new button in the upper right-hand corner.
Then, in the edit field type a sentence like:
Meeting the gang 11/4/2015 at 6 pm
or end with from 6 to 8 pm
whatever and double tap the add button, and you are set.
And, next to the new button is a go to today button which if you double tap and 
hold on it you will find a picker so you can select month, day and year and 
jump to a particular day.
