Although it probably isn't necessary for the new owner to operate the phone, when I gave my 6 plus to my sister in-law, I did go to a couple of Apple web sites and disable a couple of things. First, since I have two-step verification enabled, I went to the following site and signed in and entered on the button to manage my Apple ID and went to the security and password tab and removed the 6 plus from my trusted devices list. I did this on a computer, so one may have to go to the below site and tap on manage my Apple ID and then sign in if using an Apple device.
