First, I'd suggest taking your question to a list where the discussion
is actually on topic. I'd also suggest a more neutral list, where you'll
get more unbiased information and not so much unfounded bashing and
misinformation.
I use Windows with JAWS everyday at the office. The Mac is not an
option. Your employment opportunities will be greatly increased if you
can use a Windows system and work with multiple platforms and access
technologies. I find that my Windows system is stable, and it performs
well. I don't have the crashing and hanging that others claim to have
with their Windows systems, and I haven't for the 20 years I've used
Windows systems.
At home I run Windows with NVDA. NVDA is free and doesn't require an
SMA. I assume most people are talking about JAWS here, and JAWS for
personal use has come down greatly in price recently, and there are
other less expensive options in addition to NVDA. I've also never paid
for a Windows upgrade to a PC, and I've been using Windows off and on
since the late 90's. Do your own math when calculating the total cost of
your system, and don't rely on the statements other toss out there on
how much more expensive Macs are or how much it costs to upgrade Windows
or Windows based screen readers.
IMHO, this is a personal decision that people have to make on their own.
It doesn't do anyone any good to spread dated or misleading information
on these lists or bash products that you've choose not to use yourself.
A lot of people seem to think that the decision they've made, what works
for their situation and how they do things applies to everyone else
equally. This just isn't the case. I'd suggest avoiding the fan boys and
those people who think it's their way or the highway. Find lists and
people who will share the strengths and weaknesses of the various
options without making unfounded inaccurate statements that they don't
back up with more information or actual experience.

I would evaluate very carefully why you wish to change to a mack.
What does a mack give you that you’re not getting with a windows PC.

If you run Windows on your Mac, you can use open book. However, you
cannot use it on the Mac OS, as there is no open book for the Mac.
