John,

I like the external battery packs made by Anker which you can get from Amazon
in a variety of capacities. I have one which is about the size of a small candy
bar and which I think is a capacity of 5200 mAh.

The external packs I've seen are similar in that they usually have a micro USB
female port where you attach a supplied micro USB cable and plug the other end
into a standard USB female port on either your computer or a wall outlet
adapter in order to charge the external battery. The downside of the battery
recharge process is that my Anker uses four blue LED lights to indicate
charging process. The thing I do like about the recharging process is that it
starts automatically when the cables are connected to the unit and the power
source and stops automatically when disconnected.

The unit also has a standard female USB port where you attach your lightning
cable in order to charge up your iPhone or other device. The cables you use
with the Anker battery packs can be easily replaced with your own. Micro USB
cables are plentiful since most android phones use that for charging and as you
know, lightning cables can be replaced in a variety of sizes and makes.
