I guess I don't fully understand direct touch typing if you say it's just
like Fleksy. I thought you had to hit the correct key to get the correct
letter with direct touch typing. I also thought Fleksy was more forgiving
because I know I'm missing a lot of the right keys because it's giving me
audio feedback but Fleksy is still getting the correct word.

Can you explain how direct touch typing compares for those depending
entirely on VoiceOver and audio feedback?

Thanks.

Alan

I still just use direct touch typing. Just like fleksy and has predictive
typing and all that too.

Hello List,

I finally got around to trying the latest version of the Fleksy Keyboard app
which is version 6 and wanted to share my comments about it.

I believe they've finally gotten it to where it is a usable alternative
keyboard with VoiceOver. Having said that, I will say that I still prefer
typing on the old Fleksy VO app which by the way still works well on my
iPhone 6 running iOS 8.3 even with using Fleksy Keyboard from time to time.
I was never bothered by having to copy and paste what was typed in the
original Fleksy before Apple opened up and allowed third party keyboards and
Fleksy chose to go that route.

A couple of comments I have about Fleksy Keyboard version 6:

1. I notice that when you swipe right to hear the last typed word and
then swipe right again to enter the punctuation, VO announces space instead
of period. You can still do a single finger swipe up and down to cycle
through the available punctuation which will be announced properly but I
found VO not saying period a bit confusing until I figured out what was
happening. I will report this to Fleksy Support. I was testing in the Notes
app when I noticed this and figured Fleksy is announcing the space after the
punctuation. However, when I was playing just now by typing an email using
Fleksy Keyboard, it announced the punctuation properly. Okay, an
inconsistency.

2. I did experience a phone issue when playing around in Fleksy to get
familiar with it. The keyboard seemed to stop working and since I was in
mini keyboard layout mode without showing the spacebar and button to switch
keyboards, I was sort of stuck. However, turning off VoiceOver with pressing
home 3 times and then turning it back on caused Fleksy to start working
again.

3. I've always preferred using the mini layout keyboard which has no
spacebar or shift key since that's how I learned on the original Fleksy. to
get to this mode you do a two-finger swipe down when the spacebar is present
and a two-finger swipe up to move back to the spacebar keyboard from the
mini layout. This is important since if you want access to uppercase letters
or numbers, you'll need the keyboard with the spacebar present to get to
these.

I have to say I'm pleased that Fleksy Keyboard is finally at a point where I
can use it productively. However, it is still faster for me to type anything
more than a few words in length using Fleksy VO and then copying and pasting
it where I need it.
