I wonder how that ends up working? Is it basically a subscription purchase
that after the 25th picture, it charges you $99, or how is it activated?

Yes, but this is an update adding a few new features and before there was no
trial mode. Now if you are considering an OCR app you can download the app
for free and use it to take 25 pictures/scans and decide if you like it
enough to spend $99.99 to buy it.
