It was for this reason I bought a first generation ipad mini a couple of
years back. I'm waiting for next months Apple event to see about a new
ipad.

They did not change the sound in the iPod 6th generation as compared to the
iPod Touch 5th generation.
Yu probably are not going to want to listen to books or music over the
built-in speaker.
But, I don't listen to books or music with the iPhone 5S unless it is going
over external speakers or headphone.
