Hi Keith, On the Mac we've been using Adobe Digital Editions Preview to read Kobo Books ePub files with DRM. This is the version they've been developing for screen reader use, and there is an accessible Windows version, too, that you can download from this URL: http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/digitaleditions1-8.html Make sure that you get the Preview version from the above web site. The latest regular version of Adobe Digital Editions uses flash, and is not accessible. Download the ePub version of the book from your account at the Kobo Books web site and open it in this app. You can't navigate by word, character or line within the app, but on the Mac we can use the VoiceOver shortcut for copy last spoken phrase to clipboard (VO-Shift-c) and then paste the page that was read into TextEdit, where all navigation modes are supported.
Adobe Digital Editions Preview will also work on eBooks downloaded from libraries with the OverDrive Media Console app. Again, you would separately download a copy of the eBook you've borrowed through the web site for your library. The ADE DRM is the most commonly used digital rights management format, so the app is also likely to work for ePub books from other sources. Note that iBooks uses another form of Digital rights management called FairPlay 2, and this app will it read those files. I don't know of any application that will read iBooks on a computer, regardless of accessibility. I'm not familiar with Kobo Desktop. HTH.
