Hi Jim,

First, Apple doesn’t do a great job with braille, so you have to get used to
some odd behaviors.

For example, enter the word “toast” in contracted braille using the “S T” sign.

If you hit space immediately after the S T sign, you will be fine.

But, if you hesitate more than about a half a second, you will get “toastill”
because it is going to expand the contraction “s t” into the word still.

You don’t get 8 dots when you are using contracted braille. So, the 7,8 will
be gone unless it is the cursor.

You should be able to pan to the right like you would reading a document.

I have not yet gotten to use the Vario Ultra, but that is the normal way to
read through text.

If you want to skip down a line, you would need to adjust the rotor to lines
and use space plus dots 3 or 6 I believe.

Supposedly, BAUM USA will provide support if you call them. That might be
faster than waiting for replies on this list.

Also, make sure you have firmware version 1.3 installed. It will make paring
with your computer much better since it isn’t supposed to randomly change which
channel you are connecting through.

Later,

Richard

Enjoy,

Richard

Hi Richard and list,

Great to hear from you. I’m new to using one of these babies.

I’ve been reading the users guide and have been familiarizing myself with it
and its layout. It’s very, very cool; however, I’m quite frustrated because I
still don’t know what I’m doing.

For instance, I paired it to my IPhone, but when I input text, it is doing some
very funky things. I don’t know what settings I need to use. When I use
Braille on a regular basis, I’m so used to writing in Grade 2 Braille but don’t
know if that’s the thing to do or not with this machine and on the IPhone. It
was entering some weird things.

I have the output setting to be uncontracted eight dot braille, but I also know
there’s a toggle command to change it to contracted Braille. I notice when I
do that command, dots 7 and 8 go away. Interesting.

But, what do I do about inputting data?

Also, I’m not quite sure how to advance the display to the next line, as it’s
only a 20 cell display.

I’m having fun figuring it out, but I definitely need some help here.

I also want to pair it with my JAWS computer and tablet, but one step at a
time. Any help with settings and such would greatly be appreciated.

Such a cool machine!!

Jim

Just go through all the settings in the braille settings page and figure out
what you want.

I do recommend turning on the one that says show keyboard, or something like
that. The command is space plus SH sign to toggle the onscreen keyboard,
otherwise, while the braille display is connected, you won't be able to bring
up the onscreen keyboard.

HTH,

Richard

Aside from just pairing it, will I need to go to any special settings on the
actual phone?

Not only will you be able to do contracted braille and all that good stuff, but
you can do UEB which becomes the standard on January 4, 2016.

Just remember to pair the display by going into settings, general,
accessibility, VoiceOver, Braille.

Explore those settings because that is where you determine your input and
output settings, etc.

Enjoy,

Richard

I think there has been added a few since this list. Feel free to ask any
question you have. I hope you enjoy your new display.

Best regards Annie.

Hello everyone,

Well, I did it, and I think I’m going to be happy I did. I got a 20 cell
VarioUltra so that I can use with things like my tablet and IPhone. However, I
have never used one of these Braille displays with the phone and have
absolutely no idea what I’m doing. I literally got it a few hours ago, so I’m
still playing with and learning the machine. However, if any users could help
me get started and give me some info, that would be fantastic! Can I read and
do Grade 2 Braille and all that good stuff?

Any help would be much appreciated.

Jim
