Instructions I read recently on a web site (so you already know the information is worth what you are paying for it) in preparation for upgrading, they said to transfer, then sync, then backup. I think so long as you do the transfer first, you are probably in good shape after that. But, in case the syncing changes something, it kind of makes sense to backup last in case you want to restore from that backup later.
