Interesting. I have iOS 9 on my iPhone 5 and the app switcher works the same as it did in 8. The next item slides right under my finger and all I have to do is tap. Now, I don't always start with the left most item, and perhaps there is a problem there. But I really don't care which one I delete first, so I just tap on one and then they all work as before.
