Ha! I just tried it, and what do you know? It worked! I always thought the edit option had to be present in the rotor in order to be able to select text. Yay! I'm glad I was wrong! I am really looking forward to the new way of selecting text in iOS 9, though. I can do the unpinch/pinch gesture, -but I find them fiddly sometimes.
