While it is true that once you type the character VO only says "star".
However if you go slowly and make sure you are on the correct letter it does
voice the letter prior to lifting your finger. How else would we ever be
able to get our passwords into the field?

I know you can have echo set to characters so you know what you entered, but
a * or something will appear in the text input, and
that, afaik, is all voiceover will read out.

Slightly different, but related. So, when typing passwords, is there a way
to get VO to read the characters, rather than click? I'm
not the best at touch screen input/keyboards, but want to try emails. I
can't type in the password, however.

I did the reset and now the typing echo is bac,. I should have tried that
sooner. I have never had this feature stop working on
me through four years of IOS updates.
I am not sure if this is a new feature in 9.02 but when I tap in a text
field that has text Voiceover will now announce how many
characters there are and in what position the cursor is. Has anyone else
noticed this?

I have had no trouble typing in passwords and messages since the 9.02
update. Try resetting the phone.
