Do you have Sounds in the rotor and accidently turned the rotor to it then flicked up or down to turn off Sounds?
You can check this by turning your rotor clockwise or counter clockwise through all the options. If you do have Sounds as a rotor option, just flick up or down when you come to it to turn it back on and then make sure to turn the rotor back to characters or words.
