The problem was solved when someone came over and hit the unmute button in
Tune-In radio. I had inadvertently hit it which was when the phone went
silent. I would not have thought that mute button would apply to all apps
and not just the app I was in.
The fact that Siri worked should have left me feeling hopeful that
it was the sort of thing it turned out to be, but for good measure, I backed
up the phone using I Tunes just in case I'd have to do a restore.
Luckily, I was able to tell Siri to turn voice over on and off, send
messages, check messages, etc., Deidre

Sounds like your volume might be muted. Once you're sure VO is on, go to a
home screen and do a two-finger swipe up, to get VO reading. Then hit the
volume up button repeatedly, and speech should soon return. If you can hear
VoiceOver sounds, but no speech, do a three-finger double tap to check that
speech isn't muted.
