Apple has always had the set-up that wifi drops except when specifically being used to maximise battery life. Whenever you load an app that requires wifi, connection to preferred network is established. After locking the screen, iOS completes required tasks and then goes into standby to preserve battery life (including wifi being disconnected except when needed by one of the automatic processes.
