Hi Patty, What Richard says about making sure sending as SMS if iMessage is not available applies only if the person you are texting to has an iPhone and has iMessage turned on. Of course you can simply go to the Messages app, tap on Compose at the top right corner, then if the person is not in your contacts just type in their 10-digit phone number (no "1" is required, then type your message and tap send. As I said, unless that person uses iMessage and unless imMessage is not available, they will get the SMS regardless whether you turn this setting on or not, after all, the iPhone is still just a fancy cell phone and texting is a core function so just as you can bring up the keypad and call anybody by dialing their number, so you can text anybody by sending the message to their mobile number. Having said, this following Richard's recommendation and making sure to send as SMS if iMessage is n ot available is a good idea regardless.
