Just goes to show how it can be so hit and miss. The Vox 3000 I got lasted me
not even four months. I then got a My Weigh Vox 2 (capacity of 5,000 grams) and
that lasted all of three weeks. I used them mainly for preparing coffee and
need something that can weigh by the gram. Five or ten gram invervols is too
huge a variation. This is why in part I got rid of the Cobalt talking scale I
had.

It’s very unfortunate since its really only My Weigh that we have as an option.
If you go to the various online accessibility-centric stores, they all sell the
same exact same My Weigh talking scales.

I would be interested in an alternative, but as was mentioned before, even with
an accessible bluetooth device, I would imagine it being tedious after a while
trying to get a reading every single time or if you wanted to double check a
measurement.

Subject: Talking kitchen scale, was: Drop bluetooth kitchen scale

Hello,

Since several people asked, I will post the message about my talking kitchen
scale even though it is not a connected device/iOS accessory. Maybe somebody
will buy this Drop Bluetooth scale and report back, but for anybody who wants
just a good talking scale, the Myway Vox 3000TS (the model I have had for the
last 15 or 16 years) or the newer Vox-2 are great and relatively inexpensive
options. Here is the message I sent privately to Christina:

The scale I have is called the Vox 3000TS from a company called “My Way”.

It can weigh up to 3 Kg (6 pounds and almost 10 ounces) and says it's up to 1
gram accurate (0.05 ounces). Well, at least it counts up in such small
increments.

The scale uses a 9 Volt battery (one of those large square batteries) and it
lasts quite long.

As you can see from the description, the scale also has an LCD display so it's
even nice and easy to use for a sighted person, here is the link to the
company's website:

http://myweigh.com/product/vox-3000ts/

When I googled "Vox 3000 talking scale", I found the Myway website first, after
that I saw that you can even buy it on Amazon and then the third link was an
Amazon link to a Vox-2 Talking Kitchen Scale. It seems that this is a newer
model and it sounds even better because it mentions that it uses 4 double A
batteries and also it can weigh up to 5 Kg or 11 pounds.

I didn't check if Maxiaids still sells it, but in a way it is probably easier
and cheaper to order it on Amazon and they sure have come down in price, the
Vox 3000TS I have on Amazon.com is only $29.17 and the newer Vox-2 is only $45.
I would totally go for the Vox-2, for one thing it mentions that the sVox
3000TS is available from several sellers for $29.17, but that you only get free
shipping with a $35 order. The Vox-2 is $45 and has free shipping so by the
time you add shipping to the cheaper one you probably hardly save anything and
regardless, at $45 this is still only half of what that Bluetooth Drop scale
goes for. Here are the links to both:

I would also like the brand/model information on the scale since my venerable
TRS has died and needs replacement. Thanks.

Hi Christina,

You are wondering if the weight is read out on the iDevice and I am sure it
would be if the app is accessible. I read in the description “there is no need
to touch your iPad with dirty fingers”. This of course prompted me to read more
since it said “iPad” and not “iPhone”. I then found the following:

Works with iPad mini, iPad mini 2, iPad mini 3, iPad 3rd generation, iPad 4th
generation, iPad Air and iPad Air 2. Requires iOS 8.

So, it appears the app is iPad only and since there is no mention of the iPhone
I assume this will not work with an iPhone.

Now, as for talking kitchen scales, I have one I bought a very long time ago
from Maxiaids. I think I have had this thing for 15 or 18 years and it is
accurate and it just works and works and works. Of course I don’t know if it is
still available, but I’ll get my wife to see what it says on the scale as far
as a brand/model and write you directly. It is accurate to around 5 grams or
around 0.2 ounces which for cooking and baking is plenty good enough and while
I love gadgets, I think there is something to be said for some stand-alone
devices where I push a single button and I don’t have to pull out my iPhone,
load an app and so on. The scale I have continuously reads out the measurement
as you add stuff to the bowl and while it probably can’t do what this Drop
scale can do, you can switch it to either metric or imperial measurements and
the nice thing is that if you want to measure something where the included
plastic bowl is not big enough, you can just take it off and replace it with
any plate or bowl you want. As long as you turn on the scale after you put the
bowl you are using on the scale it will zero itself with whatever you put on it
and then measure from there.

Regards,

Sieghard

Hello has anyone tried this. Is it accessible? Mainly I was wondering if the
weight is read out on the iDevice by voiceOver. I’d love to have a talking
kitchen scale but I have not purchased one. I get frustrated when I spend my
money on a talking gadget that is poorly made and often inaccurate. I have used
talking scales and thermometers that are obviously way off and giving incorrect
readings. This one has me curious since it’s a possible out of the box
solution. :)
