Hello Christopher and Carol,
In gmail, there are options such as delete, mark read, flag archive delete
and more. I have not explored the more button yet. But when I click on
archive, all the archived messages go into the important folder. As
Christopher said other messages go in there as well. So, I'm going to have to
explore the more button and see if there is a way to just have archived
messages go in there. Hope this helps.
Connie ,

As with all Gmail folders, this is just a label added to your messages.
It's not an additional copy of your message.

Gmail is flagging the messages it thinks is important to you based on who it's
from, what it says and how you've handled similar messages in the past. I
Googled this and there is a ton of information out there on how to remove this
or change what Gmail considers is important.

Personally, I plan on looking into this at some time because I'm always looking
for a more efficient way to handle my email, but I haven't done this yet, so
for now, I just ignore the Important folder.
