I would probably want to make sure that whatever system I look at supports Apple's home kit. Not sure how much Apple is going to push this since it was announced I think 2 years ago and I don't think there are as many devices out there as one might have thought. I also thought the new fourth generation Apple TV would have been designed as a connected home appliances hub which again at this point is not the case.
I have had my Radio Thermostats for I think 2 years now, maybe going into year 3, but lights like Philipps Hue and other connected lights I still find quite prohibitively expensive if you are looking to equip an even mid-size house with say 25 to 40 bulbs, at $60 a pop you are looking at a minimum of $1,500 to $2,500, add a good quality lock, thermostat and maybe security camera and you can easily spend $3,000 to $4,000. I am at this point waiting to see what will happen in the next couple of years before I spend hundreds and possibly thousands of Dollars for a minor convenience where I might get something much better and possibly less expensive down the road. As with all technology, these types of devices will become more popular and drop in price and they are not necessarily going to be things you want to replace every 2 years. LED light bulbs, for example, have a lifespan of at least 10 years and when I do buy them I want to be sure it's what I want. Like I said, one of these Philipps connected bulbs is $60, a regular good quality LED light bulb is now available for $8 or $10 and you can probably even find some that are a bit less. Granted, having bulbs you can control from your phone, change to any colour you want and so on comes with a huge "cool factor", but the energy saving benefit you get even with the bulb that costs 80% less.
