Arnold, with Gmail mailbox behaviors have to be switched. For deleted messages the archive mailbox needs to be switched to the deleted mailbox. Go to settings, mail, Contacts calendars. Have him find his Gmail account, go all the way down to mailbox behaviors, and select deleted mailbox for messages instead of archive mailbox.
