Yes there is an app store on the mac. It's best you use these apps, because they are checked by Apple, so your mac is safe. Yes there are some apps that can help you with facebook.
If you wish you can use facebook through safari, that's no problem. Which apps you should have, that is very difficult for me to say. It depends on what you want to do with your Mac. They apps from the app store I use the most are easy audio converter and cuesplitter.
