I'v had my iPad air for awhile so my memory may be wrong here but I think I remember you can turn split screen mode on or off in settings. I like it because the list of messages is on the left and the text of the body of the message is on the right. I can read the list of message subject lines and decide if I'm interested in the topic. If not, I flick up with one finger and delete the thread. Let us know if you find it.
