Hi Alex, are you sure it's actually the Escape key you're pressing? Quite a few of those iPad cases have keyboards that don't include an Escape key, and the Home key is in its place. If your keyboard has an FN key, sometimes pressing FN+Home will activate the Back button. If there's no FN key, then I think you'll need to use the touch screen to activate the Back button.
