I agree that sometimes we tend to over gadgetize our lives, but if a plain Talking Thermostat costs $150 and you can get a WiFi connected thermostat for $99 at Home Depot then I think it’s definitely worth the consideration especially since it happens to work well and reliably. Of course for most people this thermostat requires professional installation, but for many even hooking up a talking thermostat is not something they can do themselves.
In addition to letting you adjust the temperature in an accessible way, you can do so remotely. If, for example, I go away for multiple days or maybe even a week or two, I can set my thermostat very low, say 55 Fahrenheit. Then when I am on my way home I can remotely increase the temperature maybe the night before I come back to 60, in the morning before I fly in I set it to 65 and when I arrive at home at the airport and I’m in the taxi home I set it to 70 or 72 so by the time I walk in the house it’s warm again. Of course there is also the situations where I may have forgotten to turn down the heat a bit for the day if I’m at work and with this I can easily do so from anywhere at any time.
