Hello List,
I want to keep this brief since it's been discussed a lot, but for anybody who is sort of on the fence about which email protocol to use and maybe is looking to decide whether to go with gmail or Hotmail, I wanted to mention that Hotmail just got a pretty significant face lift and Microsoft has introduced @outlook.com email addresses. I right away went and reserved [email protected], I guess having a somewhat more unique name helped. Anyhow, it looks as if Microsoft is rebranding Hotmail as Outlook because even if I sign in to Hotmail/Windows Live mail with my Hotmail address, it then says at the top of the website Outlook - [email protected]. As for the site itself, the interface is quite clean, you can even enable gmail or Yahoo keyboard shortcuts and of course the Exchange Active Sync protocol is used which works extremely smoothly for keeping email, contacts and calendars in sync between iDevices and PC computers. I say PC computers because apparently Mac computers do not support setting up a Hotmail/Windows Live Mail account even though the mail client uses EAS, but I am not a Mac user hence I am not too knowledgeable in that department. Skydrive integration will come soon and the Skydrive app is very accessible, I can see and open a lot of my files on the computer with the Skydrive app on my iPhone, I haven't tried Word or Excel files, but definitely it works well for text files, pictures etc. I understand that Skype integration is on the horizon as well and Outlook 2013 which is coming later this year or early next year will have native support for the new Outlook/Hotmail accounts and it is no longer necessary to download the Outlook Connector Pack. This is getting a lot of very favourible reviews and I have read quite a few where this new version of Hotmail/Outlook was considered to be a better email service than gmail, of course you'll find gmail reviews which would say the same. In some circles Hotmail just had a reputation which was undeserved or has been undeserved for some years because Microsoft has made it into a top notch email service and offering @outlook.com email addresses I think is very smart. Just don't confuse it with Outlook the email client, it has the name, but apart from that there is no connection. I thought since syncing email between iPhones, iPads and computers has come up so much lately that this might be of interest to a number of people on the list. I personally have a gmail account, but rarely use it because I am a big fan of Hotmail/Windows Live Mail/Outlook because IMAP doesn't do contacts and for me syncing contacts is very important.
